Frequently Asked Questions

What is a filter fan and how does it work?

A filter fan combines an electric fan with a filter medium installed upstream. It draws in outside air, filters out dust and particles, and blows the purified air into the control cabinet. In this way, it provides active ventilation for the control cabinet without allowing contaminants to enter the interior of the cabinet.

What filter fans for control cabinets does Lm-therm offer?

Lm-therm offers control cabinet filter fans in various sizes and performance levels—from compact models for small control enclosures to high-performance industrial filter fans for large control cabinets. Variants are available with 230 V AC, 24 V DC, and a wide voltage range of 100 V – 230 V AC.

What is the difference between a filter fan and an exhaust filter?

The filter fan is the active component: it blows filtered fresh air into the lower section of the control cabinet. The exhaust filter is the passive counterpart: It is located in the upper section of the cabinet and allows the rising warm air to escape to the outside. In doing so, it also filters the air to prevent contaminants from entering through the exhaust vent. Together, they form a complete control cabinet ventilation system.

How easy is it to install a control cabinet fan?

Filter fans from Lm-therm are exceptionally easy to install: The unit is inserted from the outside into the appropriate cutout in the control cabinet wall. The electrical connections are clearly labeled, ensuring quick and safe installation.

What installation sizes are available for control cabinet filter fans?

Filter fans are available in standardized cutout dimensions that are compatible with common control cabinet sizes. Lm-therm offers models in the standard installation sizes, including small formats—suitable for nearly any control cabinet size.

How often does the control cabinet filter need to be cleaned or replaced?

In dusty production environments, the filter on the control cabinet side should be inspected monthly and cleaned or replaced as needed. In clean environments, a six-month interval may be sufficient. A clogged filter drastically reduces airflow—in the worst case, the control cabinet overheats despite the fan running.

Can I replace the filter insert of the control cabinet filter fan?

Yes, the filter inserts (filter mats) of Lm-therm filter fans can be easily replaced without tools, without having to disassemble the entire fan. Replacement filter mats are available separately as accessories. This significantly reduces maintenance costs.

When is a filter fan sufficient, and when is a cooling unit necessary?

A control cabinet filter fan is sufficient if the ambient temperature remains consistently below the desired internal temperature of the control cabinet—typically in air-conditioned buildings. As soon as the outside temperature exceeds the desired internal temperature, the system must switch to an active compressor or Peltier cooling unit, since a fan can no longer provide sufficient cooling in this case.
